Last year’s flagship device HTC One X was a game changer for HTC. It was notable for its beautiful unibody design, brilliant display and packed impressive camera. Despite being a great phone it was not as successful as expected. Samsung Galaxy SIII and Note II stole the spotlight and they are still dominating the smartphone market. This time HTC has worked really hard to bring something more innovative and interesting. According to HTC they are not going to start any new trend with their latest flagship mobile, instead they are more focused towards improving the user experience. So here is the new HTC One, the latest flagship mobile phone for 2013. HTC One is a great piece of engineering. It comes with latest hardware combined with exciting software features. Let’s take a quick look at the all new HTC One.
Hardware and design:
HTC One looks spectacular and the build quality is top-notch. It follows the design lines of HTC One X and combines with its Windows Phone running sibling HTC 8X. The beautiful metallic unibody design, curved back and impressive build quality gives a premium feeling. Each mobile is made from a single piece of aluminum using several complex engineering processes. When you hold the device in hand, it provides a premium feeling just like the Apple iPhone.
Two front facing stereo speakers are located on the top and bottom of the screen. These loud speakers are enhanced by Beats Audio and BoomSound technology. Just below the screen there are two capacitive buttons instead of regular three. The volume rocker is present on the right side and you will find the power button on top. The power button doubles up as IR port which can be used as a TV remote. Due to the unibody design battery is non removable and there is no memory card slot either. But HTC has provieded 2,300 mAh battery and 32/64GB internal storage options which should be adequate for most of the users.
HTC One is the first mobile with sub 5 inch display to pack Full HD resolution. We were impressed by HTC One X’s impressive screen, but this is even better. The 4.7″ Super LCD 3 screen with 468ppi produces vibrant colors and sharper texts. The screen has a great viewing angle too. The gorgeous display is protected by Gorilla Glass 2 from accidental damages. If you are coming from 720p displays, you may not notice the difference immediately. We placed Samsung Galaxy Note II and HTC One side by side and noticed that HTC One’s screen is sharper and shows more details.
HTC One brings several software improvements with latest version of HTC Sense 5 which is running on top of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Android 4.2 update is promised and it will be available very soon. There are many new exciting features like the new BlinkFeed, HTC Zoe etc. HTC BlinkFeed presents latest information from several websites, social networks on your home screen. BlinkFeed is very useful and at the same time it looks great. It resembles to Windows Phone’s Modern UI or Flipboard app. However it is more advanced. You can add your own social networks and interact with them without leaving BlinkFeed, get missed calls or SMS alert much more. BlinkFeed has minimal impact on battery life, so you should not be worried about it. There is also the normal Android home screen where you can place widgets and change wallpapers.
HTC Zoe is another unique and probably most interesting feature of HTC One. When you enable Zoe mode in the camera, it will record 3 sec long video along with 20 high resolution photos every time you take photo. You can select the best shot from these photos. So using Zoe mode you will never miss the perfect moment. It’s really fun to play with HTC Zoe. The photos come alive in the gallery where you can create and play movies using Zoe. HTC One lets you take photos and video with real time effects. If you are fan of Instragram like effects, you will surely going to love it. There is also a feature rich photo editor which can do some interesting stuffs tasks like unwanted objects removal, sequence shots, always smile etc.
HTC has developed a new camera called ‘UltraPixel’ camera. This camera consists of a newly developed sensor which can sense 300% more light and colors and produces 50% less noise than any other traditional smartphone camera. As a result it promises better low light photography and video recording. HTC One takes photos in 4 Megapixel resolution which may sound less as all other high end phones have either 8 or 13MP camera. But HTC that UltraPixel camera is more about the picture quality than resolution or file size. As we know more megapixel doesn’t always promise better photo quality. It mainly depends on many factors like sensor, lens quality, software etc.
We compared HTC One camera with Samsung Galaxy Note II and we are really impressed by its low light performance. Photos are more clear and produces more details. HTC One can also take HDR photos and shoot HDR videos at Full HD resolution.
The camera features optical image stabilization for steady photos and videos. Optical image stabilization is very rare on mobile phones, only Nokia Lumia 920 uses it. Most other mobiles use software based image stabilization which is not as good as optical image stabilization. HTC One has HDR audio recording capability too. You can record better audio and calling will be clearer on noisy location. HTC One’s UltraPixel camera is not just another marketing gimmick; it is really impressive. If you take many indoor photos you are going to love this phone.
HTC One is powered by latest generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor which was first announced at MWC this year. It is a quad-core CPU clocked at 1.7 GHz speed. It has 2GB RAM and Adreno 320 GPU takes care of graphical need. Performance wise Snapdragon 600 blows away all other quad-core chips available on the market including last gen Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro and Samsung Exynos Quad. The user interface is buttery smooth and there is no lag at all. We quickly run some benchmarks like AnTuTu and Quadrant Standard. HTC One scores impressive 22,000+ points on AnTuTu and 12,000+ points on Quadrant benchmark. For a comparison Samsung Galaxy Note II manages to score between 17000-18000 points on AnTuTu and around 6800 on Quadrant.
HTC put up their best to come up with an exciting device like HTC One. If you are looking for a beautiful mobile phone with great performance, then HTC One is for you. The premium design and build quality, software enhancements, UltraPixel camera and loud stereo speakers will be the key selling points of this mobile. HTC Ons is scheduled to be released on April. But the competition will be not easy, within few days Sony Xperia Z is going to be released in India and Samsung Galaxy SIV is just around the corner. HTC needs to promote this device very well. Lack of good promotion was one the of the main reasons of poor performance of HTC One X in Indian market. We hope this year they will not commit last year’s mistake.
