As we had shared with you yesterday, Nokia today took the center stage in New Delhi, India and announced the launch of the Nokia Asha 501 which leaked yesterday. According to Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop, the Nokia Asha 501 is the first product in the Nokia Asha 500 series and we will see more devices being launched in the coming months. The Nokia Asha 501 runs on Nokia Asha OS which has a Swipe UI like on the MeeGo running Nokia N9. There is the FastLane in the Nokia Asha OS which is basically a timeline of notifications and can be accessed just by swiping the screen. To unlock the device, users will just have to double tap the screen and the screen will be unlocked.
Hardware-wise, the Nokia Asha 501 arrives with a 3 inch Capacitive display with a screen resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. Nokia has not mentioned anything about the processor, RAM or internal memory of the Nokia Asha 501 but the performance that the company showcased at the launch was brilliant and also the company will provide a 4 GB memory card with the device out-of-the-box which will be further expandable up to 32 GB.
The Asha 501 derives its design language from the Nokia Lumia series and has a monobody design. Removing the cover of the 501 will reveal the battery, microSD and the SIM slots. It measures 99.2 x 58 x 12.1 mm and weighs just 98 grams. There is also a 3.2 megapixel fixed focus camera on the back of the Asha 501 minus a Flash. The Nokia Asha 501 will arrive with a 1200 mAh battery which is said to give about 17 hours of talk time while providing 48 hours of standby time on the single SIM variant and 36 hours for the dual-SIM variant.
The Nokia Asha 501 will come preinstalled with some apps which will be Facebook, Twitter, instant messaging and Weather Channel apps, together with premium games from Gameloft, such as Big Little City and Real Football 2013. The Nokia Xpress Now is an app which will curate news from your region and provide you an easy access to them. Connectivity-wise, the Nokia Asha 501 packs Bluetooth 3.0, Nokia Slam, microUSB v2.0, 3.5mm audio jack, FM, Radio, Wi-Fi and 2G (GPRS/EDGE). Nokia has not included the 3G data connectivity on the Nokia Asha 501 but future devices in this series will have 3G connectivity. The device will be available in Bright Red, Bright Green, Cyan, Yellow, White and Black color options while the price tag has been set at $99 (Rs.5,500) and the availability is being pegged in June.
