Sony has today officially taken the wraps off its new phablet called the Sony Xperia Z Ultra which has leaked quite a few times in the past few weeks and as expected, the giant device goes on to arrive with a large 6.4 inch display with a full-HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution and it is a Triluminos Display with X-Reality for Mobiles which will go on to display rich, natural colours. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra also runs on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor which clocks at 2.2 GHz thus the performance of the device is expected to be outstanding.
The device will be available in both LTE and HSPA+ connectivity options and for LTE, the Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 will be used while on the HSPA+ model, the Snapdragon 800 MSM8274 will be included. There is 2 GB of RAM on board to support the 2.2 GHz quad-core processor while 16 GB of internal memory has packed, which obviously will be expandable using a microSD card slot up to 64 GB. Sony has included an 8 megapixel rear camera with Exmos RS sensor while a 2 megapixel front-facing camera with 1080p video recording will be available for users. Surprisingly it doesn’t have any camera flash.
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra measures 179 x 92 x 6.5mm and weighs just 212g, is waterproof and dust-proof and arrives with the IP55 and IP58 Ingress rating which has been upped from the IP57 rating which the Xperia Z arrives with. The phablet runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS out-of-the-box and connectivity options, apart from 3G and 4G LTE include the WiFi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and DLNA streaming. As it was rumoured, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra’s touchscreen accepts inputs from any conductive material, such as a pencil tip thus making the note-taking and doodling much easier. A 3050 mAh battery will keep the device running for you.
Sony has also introduced a new accessory, called the SBH52 “mini handset” which can be connected to the Z Ultra via Bluetooth or NFC for easy pairing and will act as a hands-free kit which can be used as in the traditional way, with plug-in wired earphones, or can be held directly to your ear. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra will be made available in Black, White and Purple colour options and while there is no information on the pricing of the device, it would go on sale globally from Q3 2013.
